3 Fun & Free Activities to Do with Kids Next Weekend
Finding activities that are fun, engaging, and (bonus points) totally free can feel like a parenting win. Whether you’re looking for something hands-on, outdoorsy, or just a way to burn some energy, I’ve got you covered!
Here are three totally free, super fun activities to do with your little one—starting with one of our favorites!
1. Home Depot’s First Saturday Kids’ Workshops
If you haven’t checked out Home Depot’s First Saturday workshops, let me tell you—it’s so worth it. From the tiny orange aprons to the seasonal crafts, it’s one of the cutest free activities we’ve come across.
Here’s what to expect:
🛠️ A fun, hands-on building project with all materials provided
🎨 Seasonal crafts, like birdhouses, race cars, or piggy banks
🏅 A collectible pin for each workshop completed
🎒 Take-home kits available if your kiddo prefers to craft in a quieter setting
The only catch? If your kiddo is still tiny, you’ll be doing most of the work yourself (DIY = Do It Mostly Yourself). There are little wooden nails, paint, and young kids wielding hammers (supervised, of course), so keep that watchful parent eye sharp.
It’s a 10/10 weekend activity in our book—especially when you factor in the post-craft Home Depot cruise while the paint dries.
👉 Where? Home Depot (nationwide)
👉 When? First Saturday of every month
👉 How? Just show up or check online to reserve a spot!
2. Lowe’s Kids’ DIY Workshops
If your little one loves the Home Depot workshops, Lowe’s has their own version, and it’s just as fun! On the second Saturday of every month, kids can build and decorate their own wooden project, complete with all the supplies they need.
What’s great about Lowe’s workshops?
🔨 The projects are easy for little hands but still engaging
🏅 Each kid gets a free apron, a certificate, and a patch for every workshop completed
🎨 Some workshops even include paint kits for extra creativity
Just like Home Depot, there are small parts and tools involved, so you’ll likely be doing some of the heavy lifting if you’re bringing a younger toddler. But it’s a great way to introduce kids to hands-on skills while making something fun to take home!
👉 Where? Lowe’s stores (nationwide)
👉 When? Second Saturday of each month
👉 How? Register online in advance (spots fill up fast!)
3. Storytime & Activities at Your Local Library
If you’re looking for something quieter and cozier, local libraries offer storytime sessions, craft activities, and playgroups—all completely free.
Why we love library events:
📚 Interactive storytime sessions with songs, movement, and puppets
✂️ Craft activities themed around the book of the day
👶 Baby & toddler playgroups for socializing and sensory play
It’s the perfect low-key outing that’s still engaging and social (without requiring you to chase a toddler through a store). Plus, you can check out new books for the week and extend the fun at home.
👉 Where? Your local library
👉 When? Weekly (check their calendar for specific times!)
👉 How? Just show up—many libraries have drop-in sessions!
Make the Most of Your Free Weekend Fun!
Whether your little one loves hands-on building, artsy crafts, or snuggling up with a good book, these activities are perfect for keeping things fun, interactive, and budget-friendly.
